Kipo and The Age of the Wonderbeasts Review

Kipo and The Age of the Wonderbeasts is Dreamworks animated show that came out as a Netflix original in January of this year, the theme of the show is that the world was taken over by animal mutants, animals that eventually thanks to god knows what, have evolved, understanding more about what humans have been doing to their planet and to them, having the ability to communicate by talking now, the mutes divide themselves, there’s groups of species such as cats, wolfs, snakes, hummingbirds, skunks, frogs, rats, otters, raccoons, and even monkeys. Each group having their own territory and starting a new life with what’s left of cities and technology left. There’s also mega mutes, these types aren’t as intelligent as other, they act more with their instincts, like normal animals, except they’re massive and can crush anything on their path. What’s left of human civilization decided to go underground and start a new life living in what they call burrows, although burrows aren’t exactly save because they’re constantly in danger thanks to the mega mutes, but still they managed to live down there.

That’s where the story starts, a girl named Kipo lives in one of the burrows with her dad, until one day a giant mega monkey attacks their burrow forcing her dad to push her into the sewers and letting her out into the surface. Kipo then starts to find her way home and try to survive by herself on the surface hoping to one day find her dad.

Kipo, is not only one of those shows that not only gets you hooked instantly, but it’s also manage to stress you out and make you feel a lot of emotions. The character (wich like I’ve said its always the most important aspect of any story) are great, Wolf, Benson, Dave and Mandu are just so funny, charismatic, and special. Showing an incredible world with a lot of different elements, combining that with a “Breakfast Club” like group is an unexpected and well planed way to get the show going. I saw that because you got the tough one, the happy one, the nerd, the music guy, the pet, and the downer. Each one showing their own perspective of the surface.

The amount of detail, the world building in the show, and how every little thing works perfectly to create an environment that connects everything and makes the story go to a whole new level. I don’t want to spoil anything, but trust me when I tell that Kipo is a show that you don’t want to miss, it keeps you at the edge of your seat and shows representation on the LGTB+ community, something needed right now in the media, normalizing that for kids, adults, and the animation industry.

Now that that’s clear, Kipo is a really good, creative, original, ambitious, and extremely well thought out, with only having the 3 seasons, all of them releasing this same year, Kipo managed to get a big following in a short period of time, with its story being constantly being left on a cliffhanger at the end of every season, Kipo is a show worth to watch, it’s a show for everyone, telling a unique story that needed to be told, showing ones again that animation can be something truly special and the only media were you can tell your story without limits.
